Steven Spielberg's dangling a major piece of Oscar bait at next year's Academy voters with "War Horse," the screen adaptation of the famed Broadway stage spectacular (which just won top honors at the Tonys earlier this month). This trailer is spectacular, and "War Horse" immediately shoots to the upper echelons of the 2011 Most Likely to Succeed rankings. Lots of golden hour sunlight bathing landscapes in glorious illumination, horses aplenty (obviously), and a sweeping emotionally manipulative score to really seal the deal...this one's a major must-see.
It evokes "The Man from Snowy River," "Days of Heaven," "Secretariat," "Out of Africa," "Pride and Prejudice," "Saving Private Ryan, "Dances with Wolves," "Atonement" and "Cold Mountain." SOLD.
There are no major stars in this one (Emily Watson is the biggest name in the ensemble), which will allow Spielberg to fully exert his trademark star quality from behind the camera. Expect lots of fanfare for "War Horse" come year's end. It opens December 28.
