Amazing Find: 232 Carat D-Color Diamond May Fetch Up To $15 Million

An incredible 232.08 carat white diamond of exceptional size and clarity has been unearthed in the Cullinan mine in South Africa owned by Petra Diamonds.  The diamond is roughly the size of a strawberry.  Because it is practically see-through, Petra says it is likely to produce a flawless diamond.
The dazzling D color rough is a Type II diamond.  Type II diamonds, which are formed over long periods of time, tend to be large and irregular in shape and have no measurable nitrogen impurities.  This means they are often of top quality in terms of color and clarity.  D color stones are known for being the most colorless, and therefore the most sought after and costly.

Petra estimates the newest find to bring a price of $10 million to $15 million assuming some weight loss for cutting and polishing.

The recent find is Petra's largest white diamond find since it unearthed the 507-carat Cullinan Heritage in 2009 from the same mine.  That rough white diamond was given a 'flawless' clarity grade and fetched $35.3million, a record price for the company.
