I’ve been quite an IT person since past couple of years and I knew how it felt to be in IT without knowing IT jargons. Believe me, everything works in abbreviations and few initial months were gone in getting a hold of the typical "IT language". See I did that again, sigh - 'IT' stands for 'Information Technology'.
So, when I entered the makeup world, I was quite amazed to know some makeup jargons typically known to the people who are dealing with makeup. It was a bit alien world for me as most of the terms were completely Greek and Latin to me. What’s EOTD, FOTD, NOTD, LOTD, OOTD!!! ????? I was baffled and somewhat annoyed by my ignorance (as a girl and a geek too for not being able to decipher anything). After much reading, googling and applying some common sense, I figured out a few of these, which I'd be sharing here. In my reviews I use a lot of makeup terminologies to describe a particular product, and I'd be including those words here too. So, here they go:
1) Blush: It is used for adding a glow to your face. It can help in brightening up the dullest skin too. If you have a natural pink glow on your cheeks, you can skip the blush and trust Mother Nature to take care of it.
2) Concealer: It is a product to hide all imperfections you have on your face. You can hide dark circles, broken capillaries, age spots, discolorations and pigmentations etc using a concealer.
3) Contouring: Contouring is basically reverse of highlighting. When we contour our faces, we actually push away anything that is more visible to the eyes. The aim to contour is make something less visible. A contour shade is usually a darker shade that gives your features more depth and definition by contrasting against the lighter shades used on the face and around the eyes.
4) Dewy finish: We keep on reading "dewy" everywhere. Its basically a look you'd get if you click your picture on a foggy day, or when you click a picture of yours with camera's soft mode. Dewy basically refers to the foundation finishes that create a fresh and glowing look with a slight sheen.
5) Eyeliner: It is used for defining and bringing out your eyes, though you need not do it always.
6) Eye shadow: It can be either applied gently for a wash of color on eyes, or can be layered over colors to get more dramatic look. The texture and color of an eye shadow can work great deal in enhancing the shape of your eyes too.
7) EOTD: Eyes of the Day
8) Foundation: It is used to even out your complexion and cover imperfections. Your foundation's tone depends on your skin. If your skin looks more beautiful and radiant naturally, you can skip using foundation and simply dust some powder lightly. In case, you do need a foundation, then it comes in variety of texture finishes like matte, satin and dewy. If you have an oily-combination or blemished skin, choose matte. If your skin is normal to dry, you can choose from any of the three finishes.
9) Frost: When I call a product to give a frosty finish, I mean the huge amount of sparkle and shine it gives that reflects light like ice does. 'Frost' is also sometimes referred to as iridescent. It is a fun and sexy look, which works best on younger skin. However, on mature skin, frost might not work well as it can draw attention to the fine lines. The term is usually used to describe eye shadows and lip colors.
10) FOTD: Face of the Day
11) Gloss: It is a high-shine lip color that may or may not add a punch of colors to your lips. It doesn't stay as long as your lipstick does.
12) Highlight: It is opposite to contouring. Everything you highlight, you do it to draw attention. A highlighter shade is usually a lighter shade and is used on the face and the eyes.
13) Kajal/Kohl: A waxy kind of formulation used to darken the waterline. A Kajal is supposed to be smudging. If you are looking for a non-smudging similar thing, go for an eye liner. If your kajal is not smudging then it is not a Kajal, its an eye liner!
14) Lip color: It is the quickest way to uplift your mood (it does for me at least!). Lip color refers to a lip balm, lip gloss, lip-gelee anything that you want to apply on your lips.
15) Luminescence: It describes a foundation with light-reflecting abilities that can create a glowing and refined look. The light reflecting attributes contain specially shaped particles that bounce light away from the surface of lines and wrinkles and create a more youthful look. More recommended for mature skin.
16) LOTD: Look of the day
17) Mascara: One of my all time favorites! It gives those longer, fuller, darker and thicker lashes that you always want to bat. Though mascaras come in various colors, I recommend using black for day and night time looks.
18) Matte: We use matte to describe lipsticks, foundations, powders blushes and eye shadows that have absolutely no shine and appear quite flat. Matte lipsticks are usually drier than other finishes and longer staying. Matte foundations are perfect for shiny and oily skins are best to hide imperfections.
19) Metallic: It is used to describe the eye shadows, eye pencils and lipsticks that have metal and shiny finish to them. Metallic finish looks quite glamorous and beautiful on darker skin tones as compared to the lighter ones.
20) Midtone: It is a neutral and natural eye color that you sweep across your eye lids to define and shape the eyes better. A midtone shade is usually a natural extension of your complexion.
21) NOTD: Nails of the Day
22) Opaque: We refer a product's finish to be opaque when the product gives complete coverage and allows nothing to show through.
23) OOTD: Outfit of the day
24) Porosity: It is skin's ability to hold moisture. Moisturizer can even out the porosity of your skin and help your foundation, primer or concealer go on smoothly.
25) Powder: We use powder to set the foundation. It gives the face a smooth finish and helps in controlling the shine.
26) Satin: It refers to a formulation that is neither too matte nor to shiny or shimmery. A 'soft satin finish' is usually used to describe the foundations and liquid makeup products that give a soft and smooth finish to the skin. Satin products generally have sheen to them, but they are not shiny.
27) Sheen: The products that have a finish with a visual property that shines with reflected light.
28) Sheer: It refers to a thinner and more transparent finish that gives skin a glow. It usually contains silicon that allows makeup to glide on easily. The product clings less and covers more smoothly without being opaque. Sheer products seem to disappear into the skin, giving it a soft and more natural finish.
Sheer foundation is highly recommended for mature women as it helps in making their skin appear brighter and fresher. It is also perfect for the younger skin tones that need to be more evened out.
29) Stippling: It refers to a blending technique that is used in concealers and foundations. It is especially effective for blending out the edges of concealers.
Stippling is done in patting motion, usually with your fingers or sponge. Stippling is also a great way to carefully apply one product over another. Below is the process:
- Place some product like foundation on your finger tips or sponge.
- Apply in a gentle patting motion so as not to disturb or erase the product you've applied underneath, such as a concealer.
- Blend it in the patting motion only, and you are done.
30) Texture: It refers to the finish a product gives to you; the way it appears on your skin. e.g. a blush can have a creamy or powdery texture. A foundation can have dewy, creamy, sheer, matte or satin texture. Lipsticks can have matte, sheer or glossy texture, etc.
